Yo moms! Yo, moms. Yo'moms. Its May and yup, its that month to give props to your Moms for everything that she does, did, and will do for you. This Episode, in honor of Mothers' Day, we explore songs (of what else) moms. Hip Hop has always acknowledged the roles moms have played in our lives, successes and identity.Songs about moms, mother earth and yo momma. Episode 18: Hip Hop Consciousness

Hip Hop has always provided a voice and a platform for a marginalized community. This episode we discuss "Consciousness" in Hip Hop. We explore the role of Hip Hop music and culture as a vehicle to affect social and political change and communicate shared experiences in an effort to promote personal growth.  We play some classic and new "conscious" tracks that prove that bangers can run deeper than their beat. 

Manning our third mic is Orlando Carreon, Educator and Activist, who helps us through this musical journey and provides a different lens  to our discussion and keeps it moving forward. We also invite you to continue the conversation through social media using #UCDEDU150

Episode 17: The Sample Edition 3

Sample this, again! We go diggin in the crates, bust out the high end wax and the 70's record player and amp. Once again we take you on musical ride and find the roots of some of Hip Hop's best cuts. This episode includes the greats including some Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, and Mulatu Astatke! These greats have been sampled by artists new and classic, with cuts from: Diggable Planets, Tribe Called Quest, Wu, to Bus Driver, Noname Gypsy, Mick Jenkins and Hodgy Beats. (and many more)

In honor of St Patty's Day we put together a tribute to the color Green. We curated a healthy dose of greenery related Hip Hop songs, in every sense of the word green. Stax on Stax on Stax!!We pay tribute to one of the most important American record labels, Stax. Stax played an important role in the distribution of soul, jazz, blues and R&B and sampled by so many hip hop songs that we had to dedicate our second Sample Edition Episode. We break down the origins of many of our fav songs rooted in Stax artist's music. We are joined by Joni who shares his love for the blues and jazz and his experience that nurtured that love.
